Detailed Job Description:

Infection Preventionist

  • Participates as a member of the team of the Infection Control Staff.
  • Shares responsibility and works in close collaboration with the Hospital Epidemiologists in the clinical administrative aspects and daily operations of the total Infection Control Program.
  • Participates in the formation of policies, procedures and programs designed to meet the goals and objectives the Infection Control Department and all hospital departments.
  • Communicates the needs and plans of the Infection Control Program to the staff of patient care units as well as all hospital departments in areas of assignment.
  • Serves as a member of the Hospital’s Infection Committee.      
  • Participates in the development and revision of infection control policies/procedure manuals.                      
  • Evaluates patient care practices for effectiveness and application to infection control.
  • Identifies and solves potential problems related to the implementation of infection prevention and control.
  • Serves as resource person or consultant in infection control to professional and ancillary staff.
  • Participates in special studies relevant to infection control practice.
  • Participates in or initiates performance improvement activities.
  • Serves on hospital interdisciplinary committees as a representative of the Infection Control Department
  • Recognizes signs and symptoms of hospital acquired infections (HAIs) in all age groups as defined by NHSN site definitions.

 

Epidemiological Activities

  • Prepares data retrieval sheets for computer entry on HAIs.
  • Participates with hospital epidemiologist in analyzing data and establishing baseline endemic and epidemic infection rates.
  • Assists in the investigation of situations which have implications for infection control.
  • Participates in maintaining liaison with Occupational Health Services, NYC Department of Health and other

departments/services of the hospital in matters related to infection control.

  • Assures the reporting of communicable diseases to NYC Department of Health.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Basic knowledge of infectious diseases and microbiology
  • BA/BS nursing, microbiology, public health or allied field.
  • Ability to employ problem solving techniques and critical thinking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize activities of multiple projects/problems
  • Membership in the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc.
  • Certification by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc

Experience Required:  Two years recent Hospital/Healthcare
