RWD Clinical Data Scientist

The Real-World Data (RWD) Clinical Science Contractor will be a coding expert within the Real World Data Innovations & Solutions (RWDIS) team of Digital, Analytics and Technology (DAT). The RWD Clinical Science Contractor will provide clinical insights and accurate medical coding to identify patient populations of interest, treatments and/or desired outcomes within the various real world data sets utilized by DAT. The RWD Clinical Science Contractor will provide support to the Clinical Science team and the RWDIS Director of Business Engagement as well as analysts from Commercial Insights and Real World Data Science for various types of projects including clinical trial feasibility, pharmacovigilance, and real-world evidence (RWE) studies using electronic medical record (EMR), insurance claims, and other real-world data (RWD) sources. The work of the Clinical Science Contractor will be an integral part of the DAT mission and requires clinical knowledge gained via direct patient care, medical coding, and familiarity with observational or real-world data. The RWD Clinical Science Contractor will also be an integral part of building a repository of RWDIS standard definitions using drug, disease, and procedure codes. The ideal candidate is detailed-oriented, able to analyze/interpret clinical literature and treatment pathways, able to multi-task/can manage several projects at a time, able to quickly grasp new concepts, and is proficient in Microsoft Office products such as Excel.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide efficient and clinically meaningful support to projects which leverage real-world data in supporting key business decisions across all functional users, including medical, internal business/commercial, clinical development, safety, and others.
  • Be an in-house expert on medical coding, including ICD9/10 Diagnosis and Procedure codes, CPT, HCPCS, SNOMED, LOINC, NDC, and MEDRA.
  • Work with project leaders, methodologists, and analysts to identify key variables used in analyses and ensure that appropriate codes are used to define populations, conditions, and treatments.
  • Assist in the development of accurate medical code definitions during synopsis and protocol development of HEOR retrospective studies, regulatory affairs studies, clinical trial feasibility calculations, business development analyses and market size estimations for new indications.
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining repository and definition management conventions, global coding guidelines, and processes and procedures within the medical coding team.

Requirements:

The Clinical Science Contractor reports to the Senior Manager, RWD Clinical Science. The person may have multiple cross-collaborative project teams and matrix responsibilities across the DAT division globally. Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing or health information management
  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience working with Administrative Claims and/or EMR data
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic testing, in additional to the principles, practices, and organizational structure of health care institutions to ensure proper code selection
  • Ability to identify and use valid resources to increase knowledge

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively and work efficiently with people at all levels in an organization.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred:

  • 1-2 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/ or 1-2 years’ experience in health insurance industry, specifically related to claims management.
  • Familiarity with Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) and the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) common data model
  • Experience supporting healthcare analytics using data such as administrative insurance claims database and/or EMR databases
  • Preferable knowledge with SQL or related programming languages, or willingness to learn
  • Certification or eligibility for certification from either the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
