We have built a modern soft goods prototyping lab to support our industrial design and product design engineering teams in the creation of future generations of AR/VR products. This lab is designed for model making, prototyping and short run production of typically fewer than 100 pieces.

 

We are seeking a Soft Goods Developer / Development Engineer to join this prototyping facility. This role will be responsible for operating a variety of specialized machines: laser cutters, 2-axis fabric table cutters, sewing machines, ultrasonic machines, heat presses, etc. You will be responsible for the safe setup, operation and maintenance of this equipment. The Soft Goods Development Engineer assist in the assembly of soft goods prototypes, varying in fidelity from quick mock-ups to fully functioning proof of concept assemblies.

 

Our soft goods products utilize a variety of materials (from fabric to foam) and processes (from sewing to 3D molding) and the Soft Goods Development Engineer will either be familiar and experienced with these technologies or be able to quickly get up to speed on new technologies.

 

The Development Engineer will work closely with our cross functional experienced Soft Goods teams to solve design and manufacturing issues. We move fast and are looking for a person who is driven to find the fastest, most efficient ways to go from CAD models to finished parts in real materials.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for operation of all Soft Goods equipment.
  • Assisting in assembly of complex soft goods parts.
  • Responsible for part quality and inspection.
  • Ensuring that the machines are properly maintained that stock material supplies are adequate and that the shop is operated in a safe and workmanlike manner.
  • You drive the commercialization of innovative technologies including new materials, construction, and manufacturing techniques.

 

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Must have 5 years’ experience developing software electronics.
  • At least 2 relevant years of experience in a prototyping environment with advanced soft goods machinery.
  • Knowledge of fabric and textile constructions (knit, weaves, non-woven).
  • Experience thermoplastic/thermoset adhesives and applications.
  • Strong skills in CAD software (SolidWorks, NX) and tooling/fixture design.
  • Experience operating sewing machines.
  • Experience in creating 2D flat patterns from 3D shapes and vice versa.
  • Experience with CNC cutting machines (laser, fabric cutter) and associated CAM software.
  • Self-driven and autonomous; willing to participate in a broad range of needs in the shop.
  • Creative problem solver able to figure out ways to get things done quickly, efficiently, and professionally.
  • Ability to clearly communicate timelines and expectations to other groups within Facebook.

 

Nice to Haves / Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with CNC milling machines and associated CAM software (NX, Hypermill, Fusion).
  • Knowledge of a variety of different 3D printing technologies and applications.
